ABOUT

Rose Ellis is a vocalist and songwriter with a remarkable sensitivity for lyrics and melody. She was born in the Netherlands and came to New York City in 2011 to study jazz and immerse herself in the NYC jazz scene.

Nowadays she works as a jazz singer all over the world and divides her time between The Netherlands and New York City.

In 2007 Rose started her jazz studies at the Prince Claus Conservatory in Groningen, The Netherlands. In her third year of studies she did an exchange year to the Kunst University in Graz, Austria where she studied with American jazz singer and pianist Dena DeRose.

In 2011 she received the prestigious Huygens Talent Scholarship to pursue a master’s degree at Queens College in New York. In New York she took a deep dive into the American jazz tradition. She sang in jazz clubs, whiskey bars, speak-easy’s and developed her own style and sound. Her teachers were the musicians whom she played with and the music around her.

Her debut album was received by critics as a “first rate debut album” (All About Jazz) and a “refreshing and lyrical centerpiece” (Albore jazz Japan).

The album is an “obvious labor of love” and contains mainly original compositions and some carefully chosen covers such as the poignant ‘Preacher Boy’ written by Billie Holiday which was never recorded before. For the composition ‘Early In The Morning’ Rose received the ASCAP Composers Award 2016 at Lincoln Center.

Rose is “a real storyteller”(JazzFlits) and adds weight to her lyrics with her “crystal clear intonation, adept phrasing and luminescent spirit” (All About Jazz). While much of her inspiration comes from jazz greats such as Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, Carmen McRae and Billie Holiday, Rose always seeks to be original, relating to the world as it is today. Her concerts are intimate, engaging and exceptionally moving.
